If you are rearing chickens to eat them, it is in your best interest to keep your flock of chickens as healthy as possible. If disease spreads in your flock, you would probably have to cull all of them as you would not want to eat diseased chickens. Here are our top ways of keeping your chickens healthy.
Firstly, you have to keep your chicken coop and its surroundings clean. Chickens shit a lot and you should clean the poop every week if not every few days. You should also ensure that your chickens have a place to have their daily dust baths. Most chickens would spend most of their day in the dust bath, dusting themselves and shaking off dirt and parasites stuck in its feathers.
Next, you should make sure that your flock is fed well. Always make sure that they have clean water to drink and a balanced diet that meets all their needs. You can supplement your commercial chicken feed with healthy things like pumpkin seeds, corn, apples, raisins and grapes. Your chickens will love it!
Finally, you should make sure that your chickens have an area to run around and exercise. Do not keep them pent up in the coop everyday as they will not be able to exercise and develop their muscles. You do not want to eat chickens with a high fat content, therefore, the best way to ensure this does not happen is to allow them to roam free!
